Hypoluxo Island, the barrier island community at the east end of town, is the clearest example of Lantana's waterfront housing stock. It's a small, mostly residential enclave on the Intracoastal side of town with newer, larger homes and private docks, and it's a different scale of glass and door work than most of the rest of Lantana. West of the island, the older core of town along Lantana Road and around Lake Osborne carries a lot of smaller single-family homes from the postwar decades through the 1970s and 80s, and public housing-market data for the town puts the median construction year around the mid-1970s, well before Florida adopted its modern wind-borne debris glazing requirements after Hurricane Andrew. That's the housing stock where I still find original aluminum sliders and awning windows that have never been touched.

The site of the old A.G. Holley Hospital, a state tuberculosis sanatorium that operated on the west side of town from 1950 until it was demolished in 2014, has been part of Lantana's more recent redevelopment story, and newer construction on and around that footprint looks nothing like the older single-family stock elsewhere in town. Lantana also carries the name of Palm Beach County Park Airport, a county-owned general aviation field that's operated in the area since a wartime airstrip was built there in the early 1940s. It isn't unique to Lantana as a category, plenty of county cities are near an airport, but it's part of what makes the western half of town feel different from the waterfront side.

Hypoluxo Island sits at the edge of Lantana, but the town doesn't own the whole thing. In 1931, roughly 40 acres on the south end of the island split off to become part of the neighboring Town of Manalapan, and that jurisdictional line still runs across the island today, with most of its homes on the Lantana side and a smaller, more secluded southern section under Manalapan. No other town in this service area shares a barrier island with a separate incorporated municipality the way Lantana does. It's a detail that matters practically, too. Depending on exactly where a Hypoluxo Island property sits, the permitting authority for exterior work on it may not be the Town of Lantana at all, which is worth confirming before assuming which building department to call.
